Marcel Lapierre was an exciting biodynamic producer in the Beaujolais, in fact one of the founders of the natural wine movement in France. In company with three fellow winemakers in the region, he spearheaded a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and disdaining chaptalization. Marcel passed away at the end of the 2010 harvest, but his son Mathieu continues in his father’s footsteps. This Morgon shows what can be accomplished when the Gamay grape is grown with painstaking care in the best granite soils, with yields kept low and manipulation in the winery kept to a minimum. It is complex, delicate, vivacious, and pure, with spicy floral and mineral flavors.
