The Ruspolis are an old aristocratic family that has been a presence in Tuscany since the Renaissance. It was Princess Elena Ruspoli Berlingieri who began production of Chianti Classico at Tenuta Lilliano in 1958. The label bears the coat of arms of both the Ruspoli and Berligieri families. Today the estate is co-owned by brothers Giulio and Pietro Ruspoli and has been managed since 1989 by Giulio Ruspoli. There are 100 acres, planted largely to Sangiovese but also with a small amount of international and indigenous varieties. This is classic Chianti, with aromas of violets, red berries and mint, and a bright palate that offers black cherry, white pepper and a hint of nutmeg alongside velvety tannins and fresh acidity.
