Back in 2014, winemaker Shaunt Oungoulian partnered with three other accomplished winemakers, Diego Roig, Sam Baron, and Martha Stoumen, to found two wine labels, Populis Wine, and Les Lunes. Baron and Stoumen have since moved on to other winemaking projects, leaving Roig and Oungoulian as the faces of Populis / Les Lunes. From the start, Roig and Oungoulian’s aim has been to produce natural wine in California. The Les Lunes label is usually reserved for wines produced from their own leased vineyards, which they farm organically. Their Astral Red is mostly sourced from four vineyards the two farm, with the balance coming from farmers they partner with who farm using 100% organic practices. This Astral Red is the result of the winemakers’ desire to create a red that is light, fresh, and quaffable. It is primarily Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay, rounded out with small amounts of Sangiovese and Syrah. It is light and ethereal and, yes, eminently quaffable, with loads of fresh berry fruit on the nose and the palate.
