Christian Moueix first discovered the Napanook vineyard in 1981 and had an immediate sense that this land could one day produce a wine of unparalleled quality. But perhaps it would be more accurate to say "rediscovered," since George Yount planted Napa Valley's very first wines here in 1838. In any event, Dominus Estate was created in 1983; initially a partnership between Moueix of Chateau Petrus fame and Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, who then owned the vineyard, the estate is now wholly owned by Moueix. Napanook is the estate's second wine, first released in 1996. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blended in, this Napanook is blended from blocks in the vineyard that were carefully selected for their lively fruit, soft tannins and early maturing characteristics. It is quite attractive now, but another five yers will enhhance it with softness on a more open palate.
