Ilha do Pico, or Pico Island, is an island in the Central Group of the Portuguese Azores. It is also known as the Ilha Preta, for its black volcanic souls. The largest and oldest wine producer in the Azores, the Pico Island Wine Cooperative dates from 1949 and today comprises 250 members. They produce reds, whites, and a rose under the “Terras de Lava” label. This white is a blend of 70% Arinto dos Açores; the rest is a combination of Fernão Pires, Verdejo, Moscatel. Fresh and minerally on the palate that give crisp and briny notes, with bright citrus fruit that make it a wonderful companion to shellfish.
