Casa de Mouraz takes its name from the monastery of St. Pedro de Mouraz, built by the Cistercians in the 12th century; it was they who planted the first vines where the winery now stands. Antonio Lopes Ribeiro and his wife Sara Dionisio are the force behind Casa de Mouraz; both gave up successful careers in the London art world and returned home to take over Antonio's family vineyards (some 34 acres). They inherited the vineyard through several generations but converted it to the first certified organic vineyard of the Dao in 2000 (and since to biodynamic as well), and their enthusiasm and energy have begun to take fire with other growers in the region. The small estate is planted to some 30 different indigenous varietals, and this white is a blend of some 15 of those, quite steely on the palate with a stone-fruit intensity to contrast with layers of nuttiness, well defined, with a long finish.
