John Grochau may have been born and raised in Oregon, but it took him several years of competitive bicycle racing in France to fall in love with wine. His racing career segued into several years in the restaurant business selling wine, then working at two different Willamette Valley wineries, then finally starting his own winery in 2002. Sourcing fruit from fifteen different organically and sustainably farmed vineyards, Grochau produces the valley’s legacy wines, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, as well as making some unusual forays with Gamay and Melon de Bourgogne. His Commuter cuvee is a great expression of Oregon terroir: lean and taut, it has notes of strawberries, fresh herbs, and earth.
