Hervé Joyaux Fabre, owner and director of Fabre Montmayou, was born in Bordeaux to a family of wine negociants. When he arrived in Argentina in the early 90s looking for opportunities to invest in vineyards and start a winery, he was impressed by the potential for Malbec in Mendoza; he bought very old Malbec vineyards, planted in 1908, and built the Fabre Montmayou winery. His wine, uncluttered by excessive oak, is one of the purest expressions of the grape one can find in Argentina. After that initial investment in Mendoza, however, Fabre decided to buy vineyards and a winery in Rio Negro, in Patagonia, the most southerly grape-growing region of America. This Patagonian Malbec is a rich and complex wine, with elegant and attractive aromas of licorice, violets, and spices.
