Elio Grasso is a self-declared disciple of Aldo Conterno. He was always an admirer of the Conterno estate. In 1979, when he decided to move from his banking job in Turin to Monforte to transform the 335-acre family farm into a winery, Aldo helped Elio get started by providing advice and winemaking assistance. The Elio Grasso estate is now under the guidance of son Gianluca, a direct and no nonsense man in his prime, and the Grasso wines, especially the Barolos, remain benchmarks for the region. This is a beautifully delicate and elegant wine with fruit sourced from 35-year-old vines at 1,300 feet above sea level; It has bright notes of pressed rose, violets, licorice, spice, tar and plum on the nose and a solid tightness in the mouth that slowly relaxes to reveal nuanced flavors of bright cherry, spice and leather.
