here are two candidates here for the “you probably never heard of” descriptor. The first is the appellation, St. Pourcain, which is located in the very center of France, in the Allier department, which is inarguably known more for iits oak forest than for its wine. But there are vineyards here, on the western banks of the Allier River, and have been since even before the Romans, achieving great renown during the 13th and 14th Centuries. The other candidate is the grape that makes up roughly a third of this white, a local grape called Sacy, but also known around St. Pourcain as Tressallier. In recent years it has been eclipsed ere by Chardonnay (the rest of this blend), and now only some 130 acres planted to this grape remain here. Young Denis Barbara is one of several winemakers spearheading a renaissance in this region, and his efforts are clearly reflected here: this is an elegant white with lovely fruit flavors, bracing acidity, and stony, chalky minerality.
