Located in the Monte Genuardo Nature Reserve, in the province of Agrigento in the southwestern part of the island, rgw Di Giovannas are one of the oldest winemaking families in Italy. Still entirely a family operation, the winery is today in the hands of the fifth generation, represented by Gunther and Klaus Di Giovanna. Along with their parents, Aurelia and Barbara, who are still actvely involved in both sales and production. The property comprises five different vineyard sites, mostly at high altitudes within the nature preserve, and production is foused on native Sicilian vines such as Nero d’Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Grillo, Catarratto and select international varieties including Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot. The family leans natural in their winemaking style, and all their vineyards have been certified organic since 1997. “Camurria” is their orange wine, made entirely from Grillo grapes from 30-year-old vines grown at 1500 feet above sea level. The juice had six days of skin contact and was aged in a combination of stainless steel and neutral barrels for nine months, then bottled unfiltered. The wine is soft and savory, with notes of citrus, dried apricots and spices and a solid core of acidity.
