Bourgueil is rightfully considered the cradle of viticulture in the Loire Valley. The abbey and With its long history of winemaking that dates back to the 11th Century, Clos de l"Abbaye in the vineyards remained church property, first the Benedictines and then the sisters of St. Martin. The vineyards remain the property of the nuns but since the mid-1970s they have been leasing them to Michel Lorieux and Jean-Baptiste Thouet. In 2018 Michel's son Jeremy and his wife Faustine took over, continuing more than forty years of family effort. The 20-acre vineyard, planted entirely to Cabernet Franc, has been farmed organically since 1998. This is classic Cab Franc, round and fruity, with the spicy aromas that come with some bottle age.
