When Pierre Lagardere returned home at the conclusion of World War I, he bought a couple of acres in Pomerol and thus began the family tradition of winemaking. Today, four generations on, Chateau Rocher-Calon remains in the family and stands as a fitting tribute to Pierre Lagardere’s foresight. The estate, in one of the satellite regions of St. Emilion, now comprises some 55 acres of vineyard, planted mostly to Merlot, with the vines being, on average, 35 years of age. Unusual for this region, the wines are aged 18 month in stainless steel and concrete (no wood). This wine is almost 90% Merlot, blended with just a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon; it is an elegant red with red berry and cherry aromas, blackberries and licorice on the palate, with much of the silky softness and elegance of its more illustrious neighbor, but for a much lower price tag.
