Overlooking the Gironde estuary at the entrance to Pauillac, the vines of Lynch-Bages are located on the Bages plateau, on one of the finest gravelly rises in the appellation. Lynch-Bages dates from 1749, when Irishman Thomas Lynch first made wine there from grapes from the “Batges” vineyard. The wine was good enough by 1855 to merit 5th growth ranking in the classification. Jean-Charles Cazes acquired the property in 1934.,and it was his grandson, Jean-Michel Cazes, who restructured the estate in 1974, adding state-of-the-art winemaking equipment, while keeping the former wooden vats as a reminder of the 19th century. The property remains in the Cazes family today although, sadly, Jean-Michel passed away in 2023 at the age of 88. The sizable (250 acres) vineyard here is planted primarily to Cabernet, with small amounts of Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot, with the average age of the vines being about 30 yeas old. This 2020 vintage, ranked #3 on Wine Spectator’s “Top 100” list, has been described as a real powerhouse, made in a ripe, full-bodied style that carries serious concentration as well as building, ripe, velvety tannins. It brings beautiful cassis and blackberry fruit, lots of spice, graphite, and lead pencil aromatics, terrific balance, and a blockbuster finish. Best from 2026 through 2040.
