Château de Sales is located in the north-west of the Pomerol appellation. With 117 acres under vine, it is the largest vineyard in Pomerol and it is one of the largest family-owned properties in the region: the estate is still run today by the same family that was in charge back in the 16th century, when it was acquired by the Sauvanelle family. Since 1578, Château de Sales has seen four different families: the Sauvanelles, the Desaigues, the de Laages and the Lamberts, the changes in name occurring when the estate was passed down through the women of the family. Château de Sales is currently owned by the Lamberts and their children, who are direct descendants of the Sauvanelles. The vineyards here are planted largely to Merlot, with some Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc (roughly 15% each), and the wine is aged 12 months in oak, no more than 20% of which is new. This is an attractive, elegantly fruit-driven Pomerol, rich and smooth, with aromas of sweet berries and dried herbs, refined tannins, and a long silky finish.
