Vietnam-born Hong Kong tycoon Peter Kwok became the first Chinese to own a Bordeaux estate when he purchased this chateau in 1997; since then he has added several other right-bank properties to his portfolio. At Haut Brisson, as in all of his acquisitions, he has been intent from the start on pushing the quality envelope as far as possible. He has vastly increased the size of the vineyards, replanted vines, reassigned certain vineyards to different properties, and concentrated the winemaking and aging functions in certain locations. In 2019 Haut Brisson was purchased by Bordeaux entrepreneur Stephane Schinazi, with an agreement that the Kwoks would continues to oversee the vineyards for a five-year period. The vineyards here are planted to a 65/25/10 mix of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the first wine usually being almost entirely Merlot. This 2020 is medium-bodied, fresh, spicy and fruity with a touch of dust, chocolate, and red fruit in the endnotes.
