Chateau Giscours was first written about in 1330. at which time it was listed on historical records as a fortified property. The first reference to Giscours as an official Bordeaux wine-producing vineyard dates back to 1552. After suffering many changes of fortune over the centuries, Giscours was acquired in 1995 by Eric Albada Jelgersma. This is a large estate, with nearly a thousand acres of vineyards and landscaped grounds; roughly a fourth of the acreage is planted to vines, a mix of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Alexander van Beek has been managing director since the mid-90s and has greatly revitalized the estate and from 2000 on each vintage has shown signs of slow but steady improvement. This 2018 is a powerful yet stylish Bordeaux, full-bodied, with firm fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Best after 2027.
