In the early 2000s, Oregon wine country's brightest rising star was Jimi Brooks, a restless world traveler with a magnetic personality and a large group of close friends By 2004, Brooks had gone solo after years of working for larger wineries like Maysara and WillaKenzie Estate while producing his own wine on the side. Then he died suddenly, of an aortic aneurism. Brooks was just 38 years old. He left behind an 8-year-old son, Pascal. And it was harvest time. A dozen local vintners harvested the fruit and made the wine on behalf of their friend, and Jimi’s sister stepped in to take over the business, thinking that her young nephew, Pascal, could some day run it. Today, the Brooks winery is a thriving and prominent business. Jimi's friend Chris Williams has been making superb wines for the Brooks label for a decade now. Pascal Brooks is a tall, thoughtful 18-year-old. And Janie Brooks Heuck has emerged as one of the most energetic figures in Oregon wine country. Brooks specializes in Riesling and Pinot Noir. This Willamette Valley Pinot is classic Oregon, medium-bodied, bright yet earthy, with a pretty nose of fresh mountain strawberries and lovely crunchy red fruits on the palate.
