Founded in 1972, Bodegas LAN (the letters stand for the three provinces of Rioja, La Rioja, Alava, and Navarra) had for some time been owned by a group of investors led by the risk management firm Mercapital, but in 2012 they sold the winery to Portuguese giant Sogrape. With 260 acres of vineyards, LAN produces wines from Rioja, Rías Baixas and, more recently, Rueda and Ribera del Duero, but Rioja wines represent 90 percent of production. The LAN Crianza is mostly Tempranillo with a small amount of Mazuelo blended in; it has aromas of berries and other small red fruits, framed by fine nuances of vanilla and toffee, and is silky and structured on the palate with a long and satisfying finish.
