Founded in 1972, Bodegas LAN (the letters stand for the three provinces of Rioja, La Rioja, Alava, and Navarra) had for some time been owned by a group of investors led by the risk management firm Mercapital, but in 2012 they sold the winery to Portuguese giant Sogrape. With 260 acres of vineyards, LAN produces wines from Rioja, Rías Baixas and, more recently, Rueda and Ribera del Duero, but Rioja wines represent 90 percent of production. This Limited Edition is a “handmade’ wine, made from a careful manual selection of very low- production vines (45 to 60 years old) in the Pago El Rincón vineyard, 87% Tempranillo with the rest Graciano and Mazuelo. Aged nine months in new French oak followed by four months in new oak from the Caucasus, this is a powerful, broad, structured Rioja, a wine with great personality, highly aromatic, with ripe fruit and spice on the nose and palate and a strong underlying minerality.
