Barkan Wine Cellars has its origins in the last years of the 19th century, when Shlomo Friedman established the Friedman Winery in Petah Tikva to produce sweet Kiddush wine and brandy for the Jewish community in Palestine. In 1971 it was acquired by the Stock liqueur company who, in 1990, sold the winery to two of its major grape growers, renaming it Barkan Wine Cellars. Today it is Israel's largest winery, producing 12-14 million bottles a year. The winery is located at Kibbutz Hulda, just east of Tel Aviv. Made from grapes sourced from the Tel-Tzapit vineyard in the Judean Plains, this is a Sauvignon Blanc with classic aromas and flavors of apple and grapefruit supported by an invigorating streak of acidity.
