Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20, then lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003, gathering his family, and starting to make Mezcal again. Romulo and his family have some of the most diverse and productive agave nurseries in Oaxaca; Espadín, Cuishe, and rare varieties of agave like Tepextate and Jabalí are cultivated side by side. When they achieve maturity, some are allowed to flower and seed, while the rest are harvested for Mezcal production. This Cuishe Mezcal is bright, refreshing, and light on its feet, with a clean, crisp nose and flavor notes of ginger and orange zest.
