Started in Brooklyn in 2015 by co-founders Yuan Ji and Kevin Brown, Erstwhile is a new mescal label focused on small-batch artisanal mezcal of only the finest quality or extraordinary provenance. They have taken as their mission to bring the absolute finest, artisanally produced mezcal to the American market, and to seek out mezcaleros who are interested in exporting out of Mexico, but do not have the means to do so on their own. Their Espadin is distilled by Silverio Garcia Luis in his palenque in the town of Rancho Blanco Güilá in Oaxaca.The roasted agaves are fermented naturally in open-top wood vats, then distilled in a copper alembic still. This is their “workhorse Espadín,” great for mixing cocktails, but no less stellar if savored neat on its own.
