One of the historic producers of Irish whiskey, the Powers brand dates from 1791 when James Power added a small still to his public house ("pub") in Dublin. Over the decades John Power & Son became a major player in the international market, the first to bottle their own whiskey. In 1966 they joined forces with Jameson and the Cork Distillers Company to form Irish Distillers Ltd. and, since 1975, Powers has been produced at their distillery in Midleton, just outside Cork. A new release from Powers in early 2023, this is truly Irish rye, designed by the distillery's archivist, who researched the company's historic mash bills, and made from rye specially grown for this purpose at a farm in County Wexford. It was matured in a mixture of virgin, first-fill and refill American oak casks, providing a sweet balance to the peppery character of the rye grain.
