Kentucky is synonymous with two things: bourbon and horse racing. Fittingly, then, one of the newest players on the bourbon scene is called Pinhook Bourbon, the brainchild of Sean Josephs, proprietor of the late lamented Char #4 here in Brooklyn. For the uninitiated and curious: pinhooking is an old Southern term for the shrewd purchase of very young thoroughbreds. The best pinhookers are brilliant speculators, with powerful gut instincts honed by experience and a deep knowledge of lineage. The Bourbon Vertical Series is a unique opportunity to follow a group of barrels as they age from four to twelve years, and experience the arc of flavors throughout the journey. Blended from only 100 barrels, this 2024 release showcases a rich nose of seasoned cedar, cardamon, and preserved oranges, leading to a palate of brown sugar, glazed almonds, and brandied cherries.
