Nikka Whisky was established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the first Japanese to ever study the art of whisky production. He built the company's first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, a location which he had always considered to be ideal for whisky production, similar in many ways to the Scottish town where he had studied. Miyagikyo, Nikka's second distillery, was built in 1969 in Sendai, Honshu, another pristine location perfectly suited to whisky production. From the Barrel is a blended whisky that was first produced in 1985, its aim being to deliver the full flavors and richness of whisky “from the barrel,” which only blenders themselves can sniff and taste. Its complex character is the result of blending more than a hundred different batches of malt and grain whiskies. After blending, the whisky goes into used barrels and matures for another few months, a marrying process that harmonizes all the components and results in a very mellow taste.
