Mount Gay Rum has been produced on the island of Barbados, in the West Indies, since 1703. Sir John Gay was a respected leader and businessman who worked tirelessly in service of the island of Barbados. A friend of Sir John Gay’s, the contrarily named John Sober, inherited a then-unknown distillery and had asked for Sir John’s help in managing it. Sir John Gay took quickly to the business of making rum. He refined the distillation process and began producing a noticeably superior product that we know today as Mount Gay Rum. Their Eclipse is a great all-purpose rum for either mixing or sipping at a great price. A rich amber spirit with a subtle sweetness, it offers a harmonious fusion of vanilla and bitter almond in its taste, with a hint of smoky wood in the nose. The combination is achieved by deft blending of single distilled and double distilled rums of several ages, and by meticulous storage in charred oak barrels.
