The Laphroaig distillery, located on the southern coast of the island of Islay, was founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers. Always heavily peated, with a distinctly medicinal character, it is considered by many to be the most flavorful Scotch whisky made. The 10 Year Old is normally the distillery’s entry-level Scotch, but this version has been treated a bit differently, in that it was finished in Oloroso sherry casks for more than 12 months. And so here are the familiar, intensely peaty elements of Laphroaig’s classic 10 year expression, overlaid with notes of dark chocolate and maple syrup from the sherry casks.
