Lagavulin Bay, on the south shores of Islay, is said to have housed as many as ten illicit stills in the 1700s, but it wasn’t until 1816 that a man by the name of John Johnston purchased a license and began to build the distillery as we know it today. Seemingly little has changed in the more than 200 years since. On further thought, however, Lagavulin’s association with Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman, dating from 2014, could count as something fairly new. Starting in 2019, when this 11-year-old was first released as a limited edition, Lagavulin has been producing a line of Offerman Editions in honor of the actor Offerman helped select the barrels used in this blend). This 2011 is clearly Lagavulin, full of peat and smoke, but with a bright fruitiness and mild finish that give it its own distinct personality.
