Kentucky Owl Bourbon was founded in 1879 by Charles Morton Dedman and is currently led by Dixon Dedman. Great-grandson of the founder. He recommissioned the brand and released his first batch of bourbon in 2014 and first batch of rye in 2017. The Kentucky Owl brand has been purchased by the Stoli Group, which plans to open up a new distillery under this brand name. The Takumi Edition is a limited release bourbon, a collaboration between John Rhea, Kentucky Owl’s master blender, and Yahisa Yusuke, Japanese whiskey master blender for Nagahama Distillery in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, meant to showcase Kentucky bourbon through the eyes of Japanese whisky. The two worked together to create this blend, with Rhea selecting four different formulations and sending the samples to Japan; Yahisa evaluated the samples, which represented different ages and mash bills available from Kentucky Owl, and from them created a blend he considered reflective of his Japanese whisky style. The result is rich and full-bodied without being overwhelming, with waves of complexity and a well-rounded mouthfeel.
