The first vodka to be made in Brooklyn since Prohibition, Brooklyn Republic is the work of a troika of resident Brooklyn vodka lovers: Gary Shokin, who came to New York from Lithuania some 30 years ago; his daughter Kary Laskin, born and raised in Brooklyn; and Mark Krupkin, originally from Latvia. The vodka starts in Missouri, where it is distilled from corn mixed with organic upstate New York wheat. The overproof distillate is shipped to Brooklyn Republic’s Clinton Hill plant, where it is brought down to 80 proof with filtered Brooklyn tap water, then filtered several more times before being sealed in handsome bottles. It is unbelievably smooth with a touch of natural sweetness.
