The baobab tree is a strange looking tree that grows in low-lying areas throughout the African continent. Perhaps because of its potential age (it may live to be 5,000 years old) it is known as the tree of life. How appropriate, then, that the folks at the Midlands Distillery in KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa, chose to make botanicals plucked from this tree part of the defining character of this classic dry gin. In this new offering, however, they have gone one step farther, infusing the base gin with blood orange and marula from the elephant tree for a uniquely African citrus-forward expression of the spirit.
