This wine definitely falls into the “be the first on your block” category . . . a white wine from Armenia. WineWorks, founded in 2011 by Vahe Keushguerian, who had worked in the wine business in the U.S. and in Italy, started out as a wine consulting company but now operates as a winery incubator, providing winemaking and viticulture services as well as marketing management support. Onw of the projects under its wing is Zulal, founded in 2017 by second-generation winemaker Aimee Keushguerian. “Zulal” means “pure” in Armenian, and Aimee’s aim is to express the purest characteristics of Armenian indigenous grape varieties, this Voskehat being one of them. “We are on a journey to rediscover our indigenous grape varieties and realize the true potential of our terroir,” she says. Made by Aimee’s colleague Arman Manoukian, this is a fairly full-bodied white with aromas of ripe apple, pear and honeysuckle, a long finish and a pleasing minerality.
