The Wohlmuth family founded its estate in Südsteiermark (South Styria), Austria, in 1803. The estate, which sits atop Kitzeck im Sausal. In the highesst winegrowing area in the region, is today run by Gerhard Wohlmuth and his family. The vines here are planted at up to a 90% incline, making some of them the steepest vineyards anywhere in Europe, and that means that everything here has to be done by hand. This is mostly white wine territory (although there are a few red varietals planted), and there are three tiers of wines: regional, village, and single vineyard. This Sauvignon Blanc falls into the second category of village wines, with all of the grapes coming from vineyards around the South-Styrian village of Kitzeck, one of Austria’s most historic wine-growing areas. Fermented in large old wooden casks, this is an aromatically complex Sauvignon Blanc, smoky and spicy, subtle and fresh, with vibrant citrus notes on the palate.
