Vina Echeverria effectively dates from 1979, when Roberto Echeverría Rubio, having earned a Ph.D. in economics at Cornell and spent eight years as an economist with the World Bank in D.C., opted to return to his home in Chile and to continue his family’s tradition in winemaking. Today Viña Echeverría is still a family-owned and managed estate winery, and its vineyards and house occupy the same location as they did nearly 100 years ago. The 65 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards in Chile’s Central Valley are planted, tended and harvested by the next generation of the Echeverría family, Robert, Viviana, Paulina, and Diego (although Roberto Senior s still very active in the business). The estate today comprises some 160 acres of vineyards in Chile’s Central Valley, all sustainably farmed. Wines in their “No Es Pituko” range are vinified naturally, without any additions at any stage (the name is Chilean slang for “it ain’t fancy”), and so this Chardonnay is slightly cloudy; full-bodied, creamy and rich, it has intense aromas of fruit and toasted brioche and a refreshing fruity finish.
