In his earlier years, Larry Turley trained and worked as an emergency room physician. His entry into the wine world first came when he got home one night to discover someone camping on his property. It was John Williams, the soon-to-be winemaker at Spring Mountain. Their friendship eventually led to a business partnership, and in 1981 they started Frog’s Leap Winery together. In 1993 Turley sold his half of Frog’s Leap to Williams so that he could devote himself to a small project focused on old-vine vineyards. He now makes 34 wines, the vast majority of which are single-vineyard-designate Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs. Old Vines is composed of a variety of old sites from California that are either too small to be made into a vineyard designate wine or are “new” to the Turley family (and way of farming). Vines are anywhere from 41 to 129 years old, and a true representation of California old vine Zinfandel, hailing from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador and Paso Robles. Rich and plush on the nose, with hints of coffee and spice, this Zin opens up on the palate to reveal a complex web of flavors, smooth tannins, and a long finish.
