Tenuta Belvedere is a small family estate located about twenty miles south of Pavia in the Oltrepo Pavese region of Lombardy. The Pasturenzi family had been growing grapes and making wine here since the latter part of the 19th century, but when Gianluca Cabrini married into the family and quit his job as a car salesman to become winemaker in 2013, things here really picked up speed. Under Gianluca’s direction, the vineyards here are chemical-free, and in the cellar there is as little intervention as possible. His white pet nat, a natural sparkling wine bottled during the fermentation process, is made from a 70/30 blend of Pinot Nero and Riesling Italico; it offers good bubble intensity, stone fruit and floral notes on the nose and palate, and a dry palate with a lingering finish. Oh, the name “wai”? It’s a word for a friendly greeting in Thai, and it was his mother-in-law’s suggestion.
