Stefano and Marina Girelli, a brother and sister team, are originally from Trentino, in the north of Italy, but in 2001 they succumbed to the charms of Sicily and bought the 123-acre Santa Tresa estate in Vittoria , in the southeastern part of the island, which had existed since 1697. The Girellis converted the entire estate to organic production, upgraded the winery, adjusted the winemaking to minimal intervention and invested significant time, energy and capital into running the estate as a part of the natural local ecosystem, focusing on biodiversity and environmentally empathetic practices. Cerasulo, as it is here, is typically a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato; atypically, however, the Girellis set aside a fourth of the Nero d’Avola grapes and lightly dry them on the vines, for added complexity and richness. This is a deliciously spicy, fruity Cerasuolo, fresh, yet with great complexity.
