Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig, each with many years’ experience working in and about wine, joined with Sam Baron and Martha Stoumen in 2014 to found Les Lunes/Populis (Baron and Stoumen remain on the executive board, but the real players here are Oungoulian and Roig). Oungoulian and Roig are based in Mendocino, where they work vineyards they have leased, but they also source grapes from other like-minded (i.e., little or no intervention) growers in the area, and they make their wines in the basement of Shaunt’s parents’ house in Orinda, California, just east of Berkeley. The Populis wines, made from purchased grapes, are fresh, lively, and fun to drink, while those in the Les Lunes line are from vineyards in Napa and Sonoma the two farm and manage. This Populis Sauvignon Blanc is indeed fresh and lively, with tropical aromas that are cut with a green minerality and bright and fresh acidity.
