Located about an hour’s drive east of Lisbon, in the Alentejo region, Monte da Ravasqueira has been in the de Mello family for several generations. Early owners of the property were focused on raising cattle and breeding race horses, and it wasn’t until 1998 that the first vineyards were planted here and the first wine launched in 2003. Today the family owns a bit more than 90 acres of vineyards, planted almost entirely to indigenous varietals, including Aragonez, Trincadeira, and Alicante Bouschet for red wines and Roupeiro, Arinto and Antao Vaz for whites. Their Guarda Rios is a blend of the three red grapes with a touch of Syrah for added interest; it is a bold red, with rich fruit flavors, soft tannins, and balanced acidity.
