Masseria Li Veli is an imposing structure on the southernmost slopes of the Murge hills in Puglia. It was acquired in 1999 by the Falvo family, former owners of the Avignonesi winery in Tuscany, who have strong family ties to this region. The family also owns a wine bar/bistro in the Covent Garden section of London. The Falvos have since transformed and enlarged the pre-existing stone structure that dated from the late 19th century, and the estate now comprises some 150 acres of vineyard, partly owned and partly leased. Their vision is to establish a new benchmark for the region, in both vineyard management and vinification, and they are especially dedicated to the preservation and cultivation of grape varieties native to the region, having started the Askos Project, which is devoted to the rediscovery of ancient Apulian grapes that haad almost disappeared from the scene. This Susumaniello is one of them. The wine has distinctive aromas of red berries and sour cherries, and is soft, elegant, and very well balanced on the palate with a touch of acidity and great freshness.
