We find this winery, and Marcel Zanolari, in the northern part of Lombardy, in the Valtellina, a valley between the Alps and just across the border from Switzerland. Marcel’s father, Giuliano, pioneered work over many years with new resistant grape varieties in the valley, a work that Marcel is continuing, having plannted 115 different grape varieties, 100 of which are PIWI varieties resistant to fungal diseases and pests. Marcel’s own vineyards are in the Valtellina Superiore region near Tirano on the far east end of the Valley, some of them at nearly 3,000 feet above sea level. Marcel cultivates everything biodynamically, and his vineyards are all Demeter certified. Marcel’s “L’Essenziale” is 100% Nebbiolo, done entirely in stainless steel; delicate and fresh, both in aromas and on the palate, it is satin-smooth, with flavors of cherry and light licorice.
