Mariano de Frutos, chef-owner of Meson San Francisco de Cuellar, in the town of the same name near Segovia, had always dreamed of being able to make his own wine. He began working toward making it happen when he planted a small vineyard of Tempranillo in 1996 in the old family vineyard area, and the dream came true in 2004 with the creation of Bodegas de Frutos Marin and the first commercial harvest. As of today the vineyard area has grown a bit, but not much, the project is now called Vinos Malaparte, and Mariano’s daughter Elisa and her husband Ruben Salamanca are now in charge. The couple are natural winegrowers and have been described as having “an incredible soft spot” for microvinifications and experimental wines. “New Wave Girl” is their orange wine, 100% Verdejo macerated on the skins for thirty days in old clay pots and bottled unfined and unfiltered; light on the palate, it features flavor notes of dried herbs, clementines and apricots.
