Los Bermejos, owned and run by winemaker Ignacio Valdera, is in Lanzarote, the easternmost of the Canary Islands; a region of Spain but geographically and geologically part of Africa, the islands are situated just about 60 miles off the southwest coast of Morocco. The islands are volcanic in origin, and the soil is the black soil of volcanic ash; vines are generally planted at high elevations on terraces carved into steep volcanic hillsides and in myriad microclimates. This red is 100% Listan Negro, a grape indigenous to the islands, and here done using carbonic maceration, a process whereby a sealed vessel is filled with carbon dioxide after which whole clusters of grapes are added. The result, as here, is a red that bounces brightly out of the glass with ultra-fruity aromas lightly touched with cinnamon, vanilla, and earthy, stemmy flavors.
