Founded in 1983 by husband-and-wife team Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole was one of the first wineries established in the viticultural zone of Bolgheri located approximately 60 miles southwest of Florence along the Etruscan Coast in Tuscany. Campolmi passed away many years ago, leaving Merli to turn Le Macchiole into a world-class winery on her own. In an unusual move for this region, the couple began producing single-varietal wines with the 1994 vintage. The signature grape varieties here are Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This Rosso, a blend of all four varietals, is the perfect introduction to this estate: designed as a Bordeaux blend, but still typical of Bolgheri, it is bold and structured, intense yet with great grace.
