Widely acclaimed as a rising star of the Beaujolais, Jean-Marc Burgaud, born into a family of generations of winegrowers, is based in Villié-Morgon; he began working here in 1989, having a little more than a couple of acres each in Beaujolais Villages, Regine and Morgon. His first “winery” was in the cellar of a castle owned by his aunt. Today he works some 48 acres, including 20 acres on the hillside of Côte de Py, where the youngest vines still average over 50 years in age. This Morgon is a blend of grapes from several different parcels in the Côte de Py, done using whole cluster semi-carbonic maceration; aged only ten months in concrete tank, this is Beaujolais taken to a higher level: lots of mineral-driven red fruit and pressed violets, defined and focused, with great tension and energy.
