G.D. Vajra was founded in 1972 by husband and wife Aldo and Milena Vaira. When Aldo inherited almost 100 acres of vineyards in Vergne, the highest village in the commune of Barolo, he broke with family tradition and began producing wines under his own label. G.D. Vajra is entirely a family affair: the winery was named after Aldo's father, Giuseppe Domenico, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name, and Aldo and Milena work with their daughter Francesca and sons, Giuseppe and Isidoro. This Barbera Freisa represents the happy revival of a blend the winery first made back in 1970, a cofermentation of two signature varietals of the region. The Barbera brings smooth juicy black cherry fruit to the blend and the Freisa adds lift with white pepper and wild flowers.
