There is very definitely a new generation of Portuguese winemakers, and no one better represents that cohort than our winemaker, Filipa Pato. No doubt she was born with the genes for winemaking: her father, Luis Pato, has been one of the most passionate exponents of Bairrada and is widely considered the leading producer in the region; he was born into a wine-growing family in the region and her mother’s family had been making wine for several generations as well. Filipa took her degree in chemistry at Coimbra in 1999, then spent two years working with noted winemakers around the world, in Bordeaux, in Argentina, and in Australia. In 2001 she returned home and, without vineyards of her own, set about establishing her own brand, making wines from rented vineyards in both Bairrada and Dão. In 2013 she and her husband William bought their own winery. Filipa describes her wines as “authentic wines without makeup,” and like many of her contemporaries she has a passion for the grapes native to her region. Her red is almost entirely Baga, sourced partly from her own vineyards and partly from other growers in the region; a full-bodied red, it offers dense yet supple black fruit and dark cocoa supported by velvety tannins.
