Located in the Weinviertel, the Austrian region between Vienna and the Czech Republic, this winery was started as a mixed farming and wine enterprise right after World War II. It became an exclusively wine-focused operation in the 1980s under Hubert Schodl, a viticulture professor, and is today run by his three children, Matthias, Leonhard, and Viktoria. They produce a wide range of wines, both sparkling and still; their focus is on unique expressions of two native varietals, Gruner Veltliner and Saint Laurent, but they also grow Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Weisser Burguder for their sparkling wines, and all of their vineyards, some forty acres, are farmed organically/biodynamically. “Loss & Lehm” is a tight, spicy, and fresh treatment of Gruner, with a perfect balance between riipeness and acidity.
