In 2010, at the age of 26, Etienne Calsac decided to take control of his grandparents’ eight acres of vineyards scattered in and around Avize, which had previously been rented out to the major houses. Etienne immediately set about transitioning to organic farming and instituting strict quality controls in the vineyard and in the winery. He vinifies each parcel separately, with a small percentage of the wine held back to age in barrel. L’Echapée Belle is his non-vintage cuvee, which incorporates 30% of that reserve wine. This is a bright, crisp expression of the Chardonnay grape with the precise mineral finish that is Etienne’s trademark.
